Tips for Success

Communication with Parents or Guardians

We will communicate with families routinely using email and phone calls. Please check your email often for messages from the staff members of the Stillwater Pioneer Virtual Academy. We believe communication with families is key to student success and aim to work with families in supporting our students.

Student Communication

The Stillwater Pioneer Virtual Academy will communicate with students through email. Students in grades 3-12 are expected to check their email daily. We will only use the SPS Google Account email associated with the student.

Parent/Guardian as the Learning Coach

The role of the parent/guardian is essential to the student’s success. In grades PK-5th, the parent serves as a Learning Coach who works with the teacher to monitor progress on lessons. The teacher will develop weekly lesson plans and work with the parent/guardian to accommodate the child's pace and abilities.

In grades 6-12 the parent still plays an important, supportive role to help the student stay on task and ensure follow-through on assignments.

The following are suggestions for success:

  • Attend an orientation meeting

  • Log into the Edgenuity program or other learning platfomr with your child so you can learn the system together

  • Establish an area that is designated for virtual learning

  • Help your child organize and prepare for virtual learning instruction

  • Assist your child in monitoring a calendar of assignments and due dates.

  • Communicate with the teacher on a weekly basis

  • Monitor grades

  • Monitor and maintain academic integrity

Secondary Content Tutoring

Secondary students who need assistance with a specific subject will have access to a highly qualified teacher as needed. The Stillwater Pioneer Virtual Academy will have daily tutoring sessions from 4:30-6:00 Monday-Thursday. Each day will focus on a specific subject. The teacher assigned to each secondary student can also assist them during school hours. Finally, students can email content area teachers as needed.

Additional Help and Resource Availability

Students and families will have access to additional resources that can be useful when completing coursework through the Stillwater Pioneer Virtual Academy. We encourage families to ask for support in accessing these materials or finding appropriate lessons to help students.

Additional School Requirements

Students will be required to attend school at the Stillwater Pioneer Virtual Academy occasionally to complete required state assessments, Individual Career and Academic Planning (ICAP) paperwork, or benchmarks as required by the district. On those occasions, families and students will be given adequate notice.

Elementary Assessment Requirements

All students in grades K-5 in Stillwater are required to complete the Istation assessments monthly or bimonthly. This meets the Reading Sufficiency Act requirement by the State of Oklahoma. We will administer these assessments at Stillwater Pioneer Virtual Academy.

State Testing Requirements

All students in grades 3-8 and 11 are required to take state assessments. Students will take a test in English Language Arts and math every year in grades 3-8. They will take a science assessment in grades 5, 8, and 11. Students will also take the ACT and US History tests in grade 11. These are all required assessments by the Oklahoma State Department of Education.

NCAA Eligibility

High School Students wishing to maintain NCAA eligibility will be required to take courses through Edgenuity Instructional Services. If you are considering college athletics, please mention this to Stillwater Pioneer Virtual Academy staff.
